I've often wondered whether our sense of beauty is shaped by childhood. A person who grows up in London and one who grows up in Japan may instinctively draw a tree differently, or place a branch in a different direction. Not because either is right, but because our eyes are quietly shaped by the landscapes, seasons, and even the picture books that surround us as children. This past month was my first tsuyu (rainy season) back in Japan in over five years, and I'd forgotten how suddenly hydrangeas appear—lining streets, tucked into gardens, quietly announcing that summer has arrived. Hydrangeas bloom just as beautifully in New York. Yet seeing them here stirred something entirely different. It made me realize that my love for them comes not only from their watercolor-like petals, but from the memories they quietly carry. This installation became my quiet ode to the season. Created for a beautiful kominka (traditional Japanese home), I wanted the arrangement to feel less like decoration and more like something that had grown there over time - alongside the old timber, the summer breeze, and the soft afternoon light. Perhaps beauty isn't only about what we see, but also about what we remember. With love,
